From Sicily to Argentina
MATERIA Hnos. was founded in 1957 by six bothers, immigrants from Sicily, Italy, who arrived to our country in 1949. They established a small factory in Mar del Plata, Argentina where they produced soap and glycerin.
In 1963, the first purchase from Europe was made of a totally automated 500kg/hr machine. The advanced system consisted in introducing soap paste; from there on, the matter went through all the necessary processes.
They then did not only produce 400gr washing soap, called Seiseme, but also started to elaborate Mar del Plata Soap, a coconut, glycerin and resin bathroom soap, that at the end of the sixties meant a significant advance.
Due to the success achieved in the commercialization of these products, in 1972 they started to produce Distilled Fatty Acids (DFA) for use in the production of better quality soap. This meant the use of technology that was not available in our country but in Europe. So they expanded their contacts with Italy and decided to bring a new 2000kg/hr plant. This plant was to be the first step to producing what until that moment had never been achieved in the country.
The excess DFA was exported for the first time in barrels to bordering countries and later in bulk to France. The quality of these DFAs was recognized as being first rate.
That was the starting point for the development of oleochemicals for Materia Hnos. In the decade of the eighties, great investments in technology and the essential support of workers and technicians were the factors that lead us to where we are today, where a diversity of products are applied in the modern world of cosmetics, soaps, pharmaceuticals, food, paint, plastics and rubber.
